When deciding whether to become an Airbnb host, it is important for you to understand the laws in your region or city. As a platform and online marketplace, we do not provide legal advice, but we want to provide resources that may help you better understand applicable laws and regulations. This list is not exhaustive, but it may give you a good start in understanding your local laws. If you have questions, please visit Roeland Park’s rental licensing webpage, or contact the City directly.

Rental License

Both short-term (less than 30 consecutive days) and long-term rental Hosts are required to obtain a rental license from the city of Roeland Park before sharing their home. The cost of a rental license is $75. You can find Roeland Park’s online rental license application here.

When applying for a rental license, Hosts living outside of Johnson County, KS, are required to name a designated local contact, who lives within 30 concentric miles of the property.

Additionally, Hosts are required to submit a completed short-term rental safety certification with their rental license application.

You can apply for an initial rental license at any time, but expiration dates vary depending on the ward in which the property is located:

  • Ward 1: Expires February 28
  • Ward 2: Expires April 30
  • Ward 3: Expires June 30
  • Ward 4: Expires August 31

Similarly, the date you are required to apply for a renewal license varies based on the ward in which the property is located:

  • Ward 1: March 1 application date
  • Ward 2: May 1 application date
  • Ward 3: July 1 application date
  • Ward 4: September 1 application date

Principal residence only

Short-term rentals (STRs) are only permitted in a Hosts’ principal or primary residence. Hosts are required to certify that their STR is their principal residence when applying for a rental license.

Other contracts and rules

It's also important to understand and abide by other contracts or rules that bind you, such as leases, condo board or co-op rules, HOA rules, or rules established by tenant organizations. Please read your lease agreement and check with your landlord if applicable.

Our commitment to your community

We are committed to working with local officials to clarify how local rules impact the community. We will continue to advocate for changes that will enable people to rent out their homes.
