Much could be said about the 20th century. It has been so fruitful in revolutionary shifts that it has earned it the moniker of “the longest century in history”: technology, world wars and their aftermaths, extreme politics, civil rights movements, decolonization, globalization, and environmental awareness are just a some of the ideas that shaped this extraordinary era.
In this light, European cities are a tapestry woven from both trauma and reconciliation—and Faro is no different. Nearly two-thirds of the city’s current built landscape was developed in the past 100 years, and to quote my mom, “Faro is old, but the city is only from the 1980s”.
Employing a fine blend of my extensive academic research and my family’s very own narratives, this walk was, ultimately, designed to bring to light how, over the span of one hundred years, the ever-changing dynamics of society and politics have intricately moulded the city we arrive at today—in all its cultural and urban aspects, its historical highs and lows, the good, the bad and the in-between—gathering insights from the past that could guide us towards wiser decision-making about our futures.
